The name Asotin means ‘Eel Creek.’ It is a former winter camp for the Nez Perce people, which had plenty of eels.

This region was formed in 1883 from Garfield County. It is located in Southeastern Washington, where the Clearwater and Snake rivers flow jointly. Its cities include Asotin (the county seat) and Clarkston.

Moreover, it has a few significant towns like Anatone. The Asotin county map reveals several counties surrounding it. These are Whitman to the north, Wallowa to the south, Nez Perce to the east, and Garfield county to the west.

Population

By 2020, Asotin County was the 30th populous region from the 39 counties in Washington State.

The county has over 22,200 citizens, females taking the highest margin with 51.1 percent. Adults of 65 plus years followed with 24 percent. Besides that, it hosts five diverse ethnic clans, with the majority percent being USA citizens. A brief breakdown displaying race distribution within the entire county follows.

Geographical Area

Asotin county has a geographical area of 641 square miles, with water taking a small share of 0.7 percent.

The most comfortable months to visit this area are June, September, and August. These are summer times where the temperatures are between 70-85 degrees. However, at the end and beginning of the year, it is an extreme and cloudy winter. Hence, the climate is not friendly to most travelers.

While here, you will experience much rain in November for about 11 days. Moreover, the county has about 101.6 rainy days every year. Asotin is snowier than most areas in Washington.

Economy

The county has different business opportunities to generate income for its people. Thus, its unemployment rate is low at 4.6 percent compared to 6.0 percent in the US. Around the 1950s, agriculture dominated the economy with the growth of various cash crops and fishing.

However, private firms built multiple dams along the Snake River, blocking wheat and orchard farmers. Also, fishing and beef-processing activities stopped after land submerging. The unexpected interference moved the county’s main trade from timber and agriculture to customer services. Other sectors replacing farming are social, tourism, and medical services.

Today, the majority of the county’s workforce is in the social and health care unit. Next on the industry employment, is the retail trade with 16.2 and manufacturing sector with 6.8 percent of the total jobs.

Education

There are three primary public schools in the county. First, there is Heights Elementary School, with about 400 pupils. Second, Clarkson High School, which hosts over 800 students. Last, Asotin Junior-Senior High School accommodates at least 350 learners.

The Walla Walla Community College is a multi-campus in Southeastern Washington. It offers the students a challenging learning environment besides various courses. Also, it accommodates pupils from the Northwest and other regions within Washington State.

Health

The area has upgraded its emergency response with modern 911 service and stable wireless communication. However, two outstanding modern hospitals serve the region. These are:

  • Tri-State Memorial Hospital is in Clarkson, Washington State. It is a level 2 Trauma Center with a Pediatric unit. The medical site has a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) certification.
